The odontogram

A digital dental chart that reads the way you chart

All 52 teeth, permanent and deciduous, in FDI or Palmer notation, shown as a permanent, mixed or deciduous mouth. Each tooth has five surfaces, labelled the way a clinician says them: buccal reads labial on a front tooth, lingual reads palatal on the upper arch, and occlusal reads incisal on an incisor or canine. Mark a finding as existing, planned or completed. Planned work always shows in blue, so it never passes for something already done.

BPE charting that follows BSP guidance

Record all six sextants in one go, codes 0 to 4, with furcation marked alongside. A sextant with fewer than two teeth is recorded as excluded (X), never as a 0, because 0 means healthy gums and an empty sextant has none to screen. Age comes from the patient's date of birth on the exam date: no BPE under 7, the six index teeth from 7 to 17, and codes limited to 0 to 2 for ages 7 to 11. The screen gives the meaning of every code, and a 3 or a 4 carries a reminder to plan a 6-point chart of that sextant.

Start with 20 UK defaults, from amalgam and composite to implant and retained root. Add your own, each with a colour, a symbol and whether it marks a surface or a whole tooth.

Treatments from your menu

Chart a treatment straight from your practice's treatment list. Its name and price at the time are kept on the entry, and each user can star the ones they use most.

Corrections with a reason

Nothing on the chart is overwritten or deleted. A correction is a new entry with a reason, and the original stays in the tooth's history.

Full history for every tooth

Open any tooth to see every entry, newest first, marked Current or Superseded, with who recorded it, who corrected it and why.

Decay flagged as you chart

Flag caries into dentine as you chart and choose which findings count as decay, so the chart holds the BPE and decay marks the FP17 clinical data fields need.

The practice sets a default notation and dentition view. Each user can switch to the one they read fastest without changing it for anyone else.

What is dental charting software?

Dental charting software is the digital version of the paper tooth chart: an odontogram on the patient record where a dentist marks what is in the mouth now, what is planned and what has been done, tooth by tooth and surface by surface. Good dental charting software for UK practices also records the BPE, reads in the notation your clinicians trained on, and keeps an honest record of every change.

A chart you can stand behind

A dental chart is a clinical record, so DentiPoint never edits it in place. When something was charted wrongly, the clinician records a correction and gives a reason. The original entry stays, marked Superseded, and the tooth's history shows both, newest first, with who recorded each one and when. Anyone opening the record later, whether a colleague, a locum or an inspector, can see what was charted, what changed and why.

Built for UK dentistry

  • FDI or Palmer. The same chart in either notation, with deciduous teeth included and surface names that match the tooth. Our guide to Palmer vs FDI notation compares the two.
  • BPE by the book. Codes 0 to 4, furcation, excluded sextants and the index-teeth protocol for under-18s, following the British Society of Periodontology's BPE guidance. See BPE scores explained for what each code means.

  • Your vocabulary. Twenty UK defaults to start, plus any conditions your practice adds, each in its own colour and symbol.

Part of the patient record

The chart is a tab on the patient record, alongside clinical notes, treatment plans, recalls and appointments, so there is no second system to open between patients. Dental charting FAQs

Does DentiPoint support Palmer notation?
Yes. The chart works in FDI or Palmer. The practice sets a default, and each user can switch to the notation they read fastest without changing it for anyone else.
Can we chart deciduous and mixed dentition?
Yes. All 20 deciduous teeth are on the chart alongside the 32 permanent ones, and you can view a permanent, mixed or deciduous mouth.
How do I correct a charting mistake?
Open the tooth's history and record a correction with a reason. The original entry is kept and marked Superseded, so the record shows what changed, when and who changed it.
How does the BPE handle children?
Age is worked out from the patient's date of birth on the exam date. There is no BPE under 7, patients aged 7 to 17 are screened on the six index teeth, and codes are limited to 0 to 2 for ages 7 to 11.
Can we change the conditions on the chart?
Yes. Each practice starts with 20 UK defaults and can add its own, with their own colour and symbol. A default, or a condition already used on a patient's chart, is switched off rather than deleted, so old entries keep their meaning.
Does DentiPoint submit FP17 claims?
No. DentiPoint records the BPE scores and decay findings behind the FP17 clinical data fields, but it does not work out the claim figures on screen or send claims to the NHS. Claims still go through your existing route.
